Organiser of the Leeds WSPU, Gawthorpe was assaulted and seriously injured while heckling Churchill in 1909. After another attach in 1910, she brought charges against three men, but these were dismissed by a magistrate in 1911. She moved to New York in 1916, where she became involved with suffrage and trade unions.
