Towns and villages throughout the country took part in 'Warship Weeks'. These were campaigns, to raise money towards sponsoring a warship. Hitchin adopted HMS Cossack, a destroyer. the community sent presents such as gloves, balaclavas and cards to those serving on the ship, and the ship sent plaques, photographs, or other souvenirs back. Sometimes visits by officers or crew were arranged.
