About this objectMale blackbirds are completely black in colour but only adults have the distinctive bright orange beak and eye-ring. They are often seen singing from roofs or high branches.
Blackbirds are one of our commonest garden birds, living in the garden all year round. They often make a great deal of noise as they forage among vegetation and fallen leaves and are frequent visitors to bird tables in winter. As well as food, the garden provides nesting sites among the trees and shrubs. Each breeding pair occupies a territory which may spread over several gardens. The male announces the garden is his territory by singing, often from a favourite perch such as a high branch, roof top or TV aerial. Fights with intruding rivals are frequent.
